Those who do not worship God as revealed in the Bible (AV Jer. 49:15; Ps. 98:2). After the Exile the ‘heathen’ were the Gentiles (non-Jews)—often reproached for wickedness but also sometimes addressed with a yearning to bring them to the knowledge of Israel's God (as in Jonah; Isa. 49:6). Converts from heathenism were welcomed (Matt. 23:15) by the Pharisees.
